Human Resource (HR) professionals and managers at all corporate levels know how difficult it is to sift through stacks of resumes, especially when they all appear to be essentially the same. Even when the best HR professionals use a personality screening test or aptitude test, through experience they are painfully aware of the low correlations between such tests and above average job performance.

As a result, HR Professionals are tasked with finding the “hidden gem” employees when flipping a coin provides better odds than traditionally used selection methods.

Many organizations rely on an antiquated model which maintains that simply hiring the smartest candidate available produces the optimal results. This thinking is also misguided. The truth is that applicants with stellar IQs do not always make for stellar employees.

2.2 The Emotional Quotient: Emotional Intelligence Measures the Essence of a “Great Employee”

Quite often, applicants with high IQs and low Emotional Quotients (EQs) end up being poor employees because their advanced thoughts become marred by an underdeveloped ability to deal with others, an inability to read the needs of coworkers and customers, and a deficiency in tactfully reading situational cues. These “inabilities” ultimately cost companies millions of dollars in lost productivity, morale, sales, and in the end, customers and profits. On the other hand, applicants with higher levels of EQ understand themselves, read and cooperate well with others, relate more effectively with customers, and remain flexible in the face of rapidly changing circumstances. Employees with high EQs not only have higher average ticket sales, but they also earn more repeat sales, are more productive, are more likely to enact cost-saving measures, and are more willing to contribute to the betterment of the organization. Simply changing the way that companies screen applicants allows them to move from average output to higher levels of performance in every position and in every department. This real world augmentation has a measurable impact on productively and ultimately profitability.

4.0 Market Analysis Summary

The Internet Crime Complaint Center is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). IC3 accepts online Internet crime complaints from either the person who believes they were defrauded or from a third party to the complainant. According to IC3, there were approximately 250,000 complaints of online fraud in 2007 and this number continues to grow at a disconcerting pace.

Even though 100% of the complaints filed with IC3 are passed on to one or more law enforcement agencies, the information collected is often not sufficient to constitute a proper investigation and sometimes the value of the loss is more significant to the defrauded individual than it is a busy law enforcement agency.

Large multinational companies often have their own fraud department staffed with many loss prevention experts and they dedicate a significant amount of resources to this business support department. The vast majority of e-commerce ventures do not have the resources to set-up a dedicated loss prevention team and even though they are fully aware of the benefits of such an investment, the overhead and on-going costs to do so is far beyond their fiscal reach. The irony of this phenomenon is that the small business owner is much less able to absorb the losses associated with fraud and is on a case-by-case basis hit harder by this sinister business reality.

Thus, there not only exists a major gap between the companies that have dedicated fraud departments and those that don’t, but also a serve lack of options for small companies that wish to proactively reduce their exposure to online fraud and when unavoidable, successfully pursue remedies.
